In most parts of the USA, spring has arrived. For fleet managers, that means getting the salt and other snow removal chemicals off their vehicles before rust and structural damage can start.

However, more spring fleet maintenance items must be checked and repaired to avoid costly roadside repairs.

The following is a short checklist. However, the professional technicians at Ultimate Fleet Repair (UFR) will complete all of these and more.

Inspect & Repair Brakes

Make sure all brakes are within adjustment standards. Inspect the brakes and replace worn pads and rotors. Clean and lubricate where needed.

Service the Transmission

Transmission services should be completed every 30,000 miles.

Check & Replace Worn Windshield Wiper Blades

Change the Oil & Oil Filter

If it’s been more than 10,000 miles since your last oil and filter change, it’s time to get that done. The professionals at

Rotate Tires & Check Tire Pressure

Spring is an excellent time to check the air pressure and rotate the tires because the cold winter causes the tire pressure to drop. Also, check the tread depth to ensure all tires meet or exceed the DOT FMCSA minimum safety standards.

Check the Battery & Charging System

Inspect Lights & Reflectors

Blown-out lightbulbs and damaged reflectors are number four on the CVSA roadside inspection shortcomings list. Although it’s only one CSA severity point for each, it can add up fast with all the lights and reflectors on a rig.

Check & Refill Your Emergency Kit

Ensure the scraper was returned to the kit and there is still de-icer in the can. Replace missing or burnt-out lightbulbs.

Check & Refill Fluids

Check all fluid levels under the hood, inspect belts and hoses, and tighten or replace them as needed. If anything is leaking, investigate and repair the leak. Top off all fluids, as necessary. Don’t forget the windshield wiper fluid.

Flush & Refill the Cooling System

Also, check the belts and hoses. Although it’s still cool outside, summer weather will be upon us before you know it. Check to ensure your cooling system is running efficiently. Your drivers will thank you. Maintain the reefer unit to ensure cargo arrives at the correct temperature.
