On July 19, 2021, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) held an unpublished Brake Safety Day. The good news is that 90% of the nearly 10,000 trucks checked passed the inspection; according to an article by Truckinginfo.com, Nearly 90% of Trucks Pass CVSA Brake Inspections dated July 19, 2021, by Jim Park.
The CSVA President said, “We are sharing the results to call attention to the importance of commercial motor vehicle brake safety.” All drivers, owner-operators and fleet managers should emphasize the importance of frequent and thorough brake preventive maintenance.
However, almost 1,300 trucks received a brake-related out-of-service (OOS) order from the inspectors and had to wait for help to either offload their cargo or fix their brakes. Those 1,273 could have avoided this inconvenience by using a fleet repair service like Ultimate Fleet Repair (UFR).
Although many fleet managers use UFR or similar services, owner-operators should consider the convenience and economic aspects of having a fleet repair service on their call list.
You might think it’s cheaper to DIY, but in the long run, it really isn’t. Every hour you spend working on your truck could be an hour on the road or with family. Money shouldn’t be a consideration when comparing time spent with family rather than under your vehicle.
Inspecting the Brakes on a Tractor-Trailer
Although inspecting the brakes on a tractor-trailer is not an easy task by yourself, fixing an out-of-adjustment condition while out on the road by yourself is even more difficult, if not impossible.
Maintaining your daily driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) is mandatory as part of your logbook when on the road. That means you must complete it before the beginning of your trip and whenever you stop overnight along the way.
If you discover your bakes are out-of-adjustment while on the road, you should get the fleet repair folks at UFR to come to you and fix them. Continuing your trip like that could lead to a devastating accident or an OOS order at a roadside inspection or weigh station.
Regularly scheduled maintenance is crucial for all commercial motor vehicles.
UFR offers mobile fleet repair onsite, even when that site is the side of the road or highway. Mobile services include brake jobs, towing, tire repairs and more, as long as it is not putting the safety of our technicians at risk. If we can’t make it out, we’ll help you get a lift to our shop for safer service.
